Political prisoner Andriy Kolomiyets still trapped in Russia after serving all of a 10-year sentence in revenge for Maidan 09.07.2025 «Over six months after Andriy Kolomiyets served a politically motivated 10-year sentence to the last day, the Ukrainian remains unable to get out of Russia. He has, at least, left the deportation centre where he had been held since January 2025, but is now trapped at the border between North Ossetia in Russia and Georgia, with it unclear when, or if, he will be able to cross into Georgia and return to Ukraine.»
ECHR finds Russia responsible for downing MH17; summary executions; torture & other mass-scale crimes in Ukraine 10.07.2025 «In an unprecedented judgement, the European Court of Human Rights has unanimously found Russia guilty of a huge number of grave violations “on a massive scale across Ukraine”. Agents of the Russian state were found responsible for the downing on 17 July 2014 of Malaysian airliner MH17 and killing of all 298 passengers and crew; the summary executions of civilians and prisoners of war; gang rapes; the deportation of children; indiscriminate military attacks and much more. \ The ECHR Grand Chamber judgement announced on 9 July 2025 could not have been more damning and, furthermore, effectively covers the entire period of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine from 11 May 2014.
☼¶ European Court of Human Rights¶ ☼☼—Grand Chamber judgment in an inter-State case —
In the case of Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia the Court held Russia accountable for widespread and flagrant abuses of human rights arising from the conflict in Ukraine since 2014, in breach of the European Convention.
The case concerned the conflict that began in eastern Ukraine in 2014 following the arrival in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of pro-Russian armed groups, and escalated after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine beginning on 24 February 2022. It also concerned the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in summer 2014, killing all those on board, many of whom were Dutch nationals.
The Court found that Russia was responsible for repeated human-rights violations over a period of more than eight years. This included indiscriminate military attacks; summary executions; torture, notably rape as a weapon of war; unlawful and arbitrary detentions; intimidation and persecution of journalists and religious groups; looting and destruction of private property; and the organised removal of children to Russia and their adoption there.
The Court also found that Russia was responsible for violating the right to life by shooting down flight MH17 and had added to the profound suffering of the crash victims’ next of kin by being uncooperative and obstructive in the context of international efforts to uncover the truth.

¶ ¶ Noahpinion - Noah Smith☼☼☼—Free-market economics is working surprisingly well Which economic approach works depends a lot on where you start from. «The boring truth is that the ideal economy is a mixed one; it’s built on the foundation of markets, but also contains a significant amount of redistribution, public goods provision, and industrial policy. The exact optimal balance depends on the country, and on the times; even if you happen to get it exactly right for a while, the optimal mix will change over time as countries develop, as technology changes, as trading patterns shift, and so on.»

Trump is enabling Chinese power An incompetent, selfish, inwardly focused administration is making America less of an obstacle to China's rise. «This doesn’t mean that China is going to rule the world. Ruling the world is a very hard thing to do, and there are many obstacles other than American power — China’s own internal power struggles and the limitations of its authoritarian system, opposition from its neighbors, long-term economic and demographic challenges, and the personal flaws of Xi Jinping. But with Trump making America more and more of a geopolitical nonentity, chaos agent, and wild card, the path to hegemony looks a lot smoother for China than it did nine months ago.»

Mending Clothes Artistically
Leah Libresco Sargeant
For Grace Russo, a mother in Westminster, Maryland, mending clothes is both a quotidian chore of stewardship and an invitation to contemplation. Inside her home, she patches clothes with exuberant needlework, which overspills the original damage and overruns the garment. Outside, she applies her training as a master gardener to decide which acts of human creation honor the natural world and which must be ripped out by the roots.
Russo became interested in mending when she was in graduate school, where she had little space in her budget for new clothes when hers got too thin or damaged. The clothes that most needed mending were the ones she had worn most.
Russo mends her husband’s cotton button-downs with little rivulets of colorful thread.

Rationale for Just Peace Ukraine —
The Russo-Ukrainian War is illegal
Russia’s War to Eliminate Ukraine is immoral
Russia’s War on Ukraine is inexpedient
In brief —
RF forces must leave Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and any other occupied territories.
RF must assist prisoners and the deported, whether children or adults, to return home.
The Kremlin must use its fossil-fuel and other loot to recompense for damages its forces have caused.
If you are thinking today about how to help Ukrainians, here are some possibilities: Come Back Alive, a Ukrainian NGO that supports soldiers on the battlefield and veterans; United 24, the Ukrainian state platform for donations, with many excellent projects); RAZOM, an American NGO, tax-deductible for US citizens, which cooperates with Ukrainian NGOS to support civilians; and BlueCheck Ukraine, which aims for efficient cooperation with Ukrainian groups and is also tax-deductible. There's an underground movement, some of you may have encountered, called Cathedrals on Cannabis, which is about people who visit the great cathedrals in an altered state of consciousness. And I should also add a disclaimer. I'm not advocating that everyone takes psychedelics. For some people, they're dangerous. I have a nephew who's... a psychiatric nurse based in Wells near Glastonbury. And every year he's one of the people who has to pick up the pieces after the Glastonbury Festival because there are always some people who've taken psychedelics that have pushed them into a psychotic episode. So this is a real danger. They're powerful and it's because they're so powerful that they can have destructive and harmful effects on some people some of the time.
