This would make sense if people loved air travel, but everybody hates it. The only reason we put up with all the hassle inherent in an airplane is that the darn things fly, which is the one thing the Acela certainly can’t do. / Really the Acela is a train with low self-esteem. Or maybe a personality crisis.»

✨¶Apostolate of Prayer
Pope's October prayer intention: 'Collaboration among religions'
Pope Leo XIV releases his prayer intention for the month of October, inviting the faithful to pray for 'collaboration between different religious traditions.'
Plough: There Is No Separation
Hannah Whitall Smith
An unscriptural and unnatural divorce has been brought about between our so-called religious life and our so-called temporal life, as if our religion were something apart from ourselves, a sort of outside garment that was to be put on and off according to our circumstances and purposes. On Sundays, and in church, our purpose is to seek God, and worship and serve him, and therefore on Sundays we bring out our religious life and put it on in a suitably solemn manner, and live it with a strained gravity and decorum which deprives it of half its power. But on Mondays our purpose is to seek our own interests and serve them, and so we bring out our temporal life and put it on with a sense of relief, as from an unnatural bondage, and live it with ease and naturalness, and consequently with far more power.
+Laughter, the best Medicine+
+Afterthoughts+
Prompted by my friend Danny remembering a 1964 recording by The Animals rock band.
In the 1960s, the Coorparoo State School, which I attended, was big: there were some 1 200 pupils when I started forty in each of four classes across eight grades-- then about 1 100 when the "Scholarship year" was moved over to high school. It was so big that the department of education assigned one of the rare music specialists to be based at our school: first Miss Nesbit and then Miss Monica Guivarra.
This was thought to be a great blessing by our ordinary teachers, who thereby
1) didn't have to teach singing and
2) had an hour during the school-day when they could mark pupil's work, instead of doing it all after school.
Miss Guivarra was much impressed by the Kodaly method of musical education [Zoltán Kodály, 6 March 1967 (age 84 years), Budapest]. His was a progressive or incremental method. Instead of beginning with a simplified version of what the instructor considers to be the best, Kodály suggested that teachers start with the pupils' existing experience of music. Instead of beginning with, say, a simplified version of Bach's B minor Mass, one begins with the folk song and street cries (or, in our day, advertising jingles) of the people, and with the nursery songs and playground chants of children.
So the children of Coorparoo sang bush songs and ballads during music instruction. Some of the lyrics were greeted with raised eye-brows by the more-earnest denizens. The last stanza of 'Click Go the Shears' alludes without opprobrium to the shearers' habit of 'drinking their cheque' in the first tavern that they come to after finishing a bout of shearing -- was this suitable for the young people of Coorparoo?
On 18 May 1964, a Geordie rock band called The Animals recorded a blues rock version of the folk song 'There is a House called "Rising Sun"'and it 'hit the charts' in the English-speaking world. A few months later, Miss Guivarra had us singing a soulful lament about a house of 'drink and misery' in New Orleans in Louisiana.
I'm unsure whether we sang exactly the same "Rising Sun" lyrics as The Animals. I rather think not, because their lyrics allude only to the misery of gambling and drunkenness, whereas a conversation of the women of my household suggests that we sang older English lyrics.
As I recall it, my mother and sisters were considering the propriety of children singing about a house which was a brothel. What, I asked myself, was a 'brothel'? I had learnt in Sunday school that 'Bethel' was ‘God’s House'. Perhaps a brothel is a kind of soup kitchen?

☼¶ International Intrigue¶ ☼☼—October 21, 2025 | Read Online | « One of the reasons we left the foreign service and founded Intrigue was we feared our world’s attention was increasingly absorbed by (say) the leader of the free world dunking on an ambassador, rather than (say) two allies inking a historic minerals deal. / But this Trump-Rudd moment does highlight a couple of things worth tackling briefly. / First, it’s an example of how sometimes our legacy media friends can create the news (drawing Trump’s attention to Rudd’s comments) in hopes of firing up the rage cycle for another few clicks. It’s short-term profitable, but arguably long-term corrosive, not only to a legacy media already struggling with declining trust, but also a broader free world still struggling to meaningfully debate its own existential challenges. / Second, this whole visit was also an example of how sometimes partisan politics can complicate good policy. The opposition in Australia has long dunked on Albanese’s seeming inability to land a meeting with Trump until now, but the timing (intentional or not) struck us as kinda shrewd: rather than go early but empty and risk another Oval Office ambush, the two sides spent months hammering out several deals, with the result that everyone (except maybe a certain ambassador) just walked away happy. »

Trump, Putin, Xi, Erdogan and all the other wannabee autocrats and actual dictators are teaching a hard lesson to anyone who believes in theories of economic determinism from neo-liberalism to Marxism: politics always beats economics. The holders of political power can always turn the superrich into supplicants by the simple method of threatening to take their riches from them.

The only reason we put up with all the hassle inherent in an airplane is that the darn things fly, which is the one thing the Acela certainly can’t do. / Really the Acela is a train with low self-esteem. Or maybe a personality crisis.»

Trump Is Tormenting Ukraine Claire Berlinski writes that DJT “might really have been considering sending the missiles, until Putin got him on the phone and sweet-talked him. (It’s always the last person to speak to him, especially when it’s Putin.) I agree that the press, when reporting on matters like these, should take into account Trump’s obvious hostility to Zelensky and his obvious infatuation with Putin.”

He desperately wants to work with Putin, he just also wants Putin’s love and respect (and Putin was careful to lather Trump with praise this week). That is where we are. / Hoping Trump will fundamentally change that policy is a massive risk and wastes time. Stop it.»
✨#152: Oil Production And Logistics «Trump changed little substantial towards Ukraine that I can see. My guess is that he will only change his fundamental stance if he feels Russia is close to collapse—in which case he will become the most pro-Ukrainian person on the planet.»🔴

Love this diverse and deeply thoughtful compilation! The take on trains especially resonated; it's so true about identity crises in design. It reminds me how we sometimes over-complicate things alot, instead of just embracing what's truly efficient, like our awesome European rail networks. So much to explore here!
