Victory in Ukraine would dramatically strengthen Vladimir Putin’s war machine
By Peter Dickinson
If Russia does expand the war further, the one thing Western leaders cannot do is claim they were not warned. Putin has placed the whole of Russian society on a war footing and is openly preparing his entire country for a protracted struggle against the West. The current invasion is an important part of this struggle, but it is only the beginning. Russian victory in Ukraine would set the stage for even bolder acts of international aggression. It would supercharge Putin’s war machine and radically increase the cost of stopping him. The only way to avoid this disastrous outcome is by making sure the Russian invasion of Ukraine ends in defeat.

Recently I’ve spent a fair bit of time attending funerals. That’s what happens when you reach my stage of life. Early in life you go to a string of 21st birthdays, then marriages, then christenings and so on. But by the time you reach your 70s, it’s funerals that claim your time. It certainly makes you ponder your own mortality: you might be the next cab off the rank. This might seem depressing but it’s not, at least for me. In part that’s because the Catholic Church does funerals well. This is because of the Good News of Easter, with the Paschal Candle casting its light over the coffin. Then there’s the healing power of ritual which is a large part of our funeral celebrations. Words aren’t enough in the face of death; ritual supplies the more that’s needed – especially the ritual of the Mass which speaks of a life that’s bigger than death. So filling the diary with funerals isn’t so bad after all. Nor is the thought that this is where I’m heading.

Dr Dariia Orobchuk (University of Hildesheim, Germany) will speak on “Navigating Language Identity during the Language Shift in Ukraine: Media Influencers between Public Space and Individual Perspective.” Friday 21 June, 4:15pm, William Macmahon Ball Theatre, Old Arts building, University of Melbourne, Parkville campus. This seminar is organised by Melbourne University’s Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space. No registration is necessary.
This presentation explores the language shift in Ukraine within social media discourse, particularly the increasing use of Ukrainian over Russian following the Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022. The study examines 20 YouTube videos from April 2022 to May 2024, using discourse analysis and content analysis to understand the narratives driving this linguistic transition. Key media influencers and bloggers articulate reasons for adopting Ukrainian, reflecting on language choice, past usage, and future predictions.

Once, when I was young, I went up Snowdon. It was stiff going and, when we got to the top, we rejoiced to think the hardest part was over, and that it would be easier going down. But it was not. Going down was worse than going up, much worse. It got one in the shins, a knife-thrust for each step.
In one sense, aging is like this. Is everyone the second half of life is going downhill?

Over the past six months, Ukraine has been in the most precarious position since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Delays in U.S. military aid and in Ukrainian mobilization have enabled Russian forces to make creeping gains along the front. Russia’s attacks against Ukraine’s energy grid destroyed most of the country’s non-nuclear power generation capacity. Moscow’s theory of victory is clear: to exhaust Ukraine and its people so that they capitulate.
But what do Ukrainians really think about the war and the prospects for peace? A recent Carnegie-sponsored poll of Ukrainians, analyzed in a new article by Nicole Gonik and Eric Ciaramella, finds that they are still overwhelmingly committed to the war effort and are opposed to giving into Russian demands.
At the same time, Ukrainians’ soaring expectations of what is possible on the battlefield create challenges for President Volodymyr Zelensky as he seeks to bolster morale and set the conditions for an eventual end to hostilities. The poll, which was featured in the Washington Post, also revealed a growing generational gap in perceptions, with younger Ukrainians more anxious about the war’s trajectory and older Ukrainians more bullish about the prospects for total victory.
